Where do we draw the line between free speech and dangerous misinformation? Algorithms not only dictate our data feeds but also reinforce our echo chambers, the stakes have never been higher – both for our individual perspectives and for society at large.
Live at the Pleasance Theatre, London Sophia Smith Galer and Jamie Bartlett discuss the pressing issue of digital manipulation, exposing how unchecked algorithms can distort reality and question the balance between free speech and censorship. This recording was Part 2 of the evening. Before the main keynote talk was unveiled we had a lot of nourishing fun downstairs with the audience during Act 1: we set up a lightly immersive A&E field hospital, (Algorithm & Emergency) where two very talented actor / facilitators - Jessie Lu Flynn & Kevin Davidson who held a playful space in which we all investigated how people felt about their data feeds and algorithmic feedings.
How did our audience find their information? Was it what they wanted? Was it toxic? Did they believe it was all true? How could their daily feed be better, bring more happiness, higher quality information? The playful workshop allowed audience's to connect and find a shared wisdom and group resilience against all the manipulation we face on a minute by minute basis.
